Ultrasonic Diffraction

using Goniometer

Model: HO-ED-A-03

Holmarc’s Ultrasonic diffraction with Goniometer (Model No :) is a standard classical diffraction experiment used in physics labs. Ultrasonic diffraction apparatus is used to study diffraction of light by ultrasonic waves. Ultrasonic sound refers to sound with a frequency greater than the human audible range (20Hz to 20 KHz). When an ultrasonic wave propagates through a medium, the molecules in that medium vibrate over very short distance in a direction parallel to the longitudinal wave. The ultrasonic diffraction experimental setup uses sodium lamp as light source. As the sodium light is passes through the glass tank, we will observe clear higher order diffraction pattern on the eyepiece of the spectrometer. Our high resolved Spectroscopic Goniometer stage helps to distinguish the fringe pattern at certain frequencies.

The ultrasonic waves generated by the transducer travels through the medium (liquid) and get reflected at the side by side (flat glass plate) of the cell. The incident and reflected waves interfere and a stationary / standing wave pattern is formed. Piezo electric crystals are mounted using a kinematic holder at the centre of Goniometer. This helps to direct the sodium light through the liquid and then to the detector/eyepiece conveniently by using the spectroscopic arm design. The diffraction pattern is changed by replacing the crystals like 3 MHz to 5MHz.The velocity of ultrasonic waves in liquids can be calculated from this experiment.
